Tesla will be producing a $60,000 all electric sedan scheduled to be released in 2010 announced by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today. The Model S will go 225 miles on a single charge. The plant was suppose to be in New Mexico but will now be located in California due to some financial incentives under the California Alternative Energy and Advanced Transportation Financing Authority. An estimated $100 million worth of manufacturing equipment will be leased to Tesla by the state and would save Tesla as much as $9 million. Tesla would also benefit from a grant worth at least $1 million to train its new employees under a state Employment Training Panel. By producing the Tesla Model S in California, it will help the state meet a goal of reducing its greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2020 under the landmaker legislation AB32. The current Tesla sportscar costs $89,000 so the sedan will surely be a hot commodity. The 2009 model is already sold out with a $5,000 wait list. There are a lot of highly anticipated electric and hybrid cars coming out in 2010 and it will be a great time to be in the market for a new car.

Many people may not know about this but there is a growing ecological catastrophe called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It is a collection of unwanted plastics that have wandered into the middle of the Pacific Ocean northeast of Hawaii. The patch was discovered by Captain Charles Moore in 1997 and he has since formed a nonprofit organization called Algalita Marine Research Foundation to learn more about this phenomenon. Plastic is not biodegradable and it can often end up in the ocean. It is not surprising that it has all ended up in this remote part of the Ocean in the middle of nowhere which is twice the size of Texas. The video above is definitely worth your time to learn more about this interesting discovery.
Inveneo is a nonprofit organization that brings telephony, computing, and the internet to underdeveloped countries. Inveneo designs and delivers tools of information and communications technology (ICT) to organizations that provide vital services such as healthcare, education, economic development, and relief to rural communities. Inveneo provides open source software and hardware products that use low power and can operate on a 12volt car battery. The 12 volt battery can also be charged using alternative energy sources such as solar, or wind power.
For example, some places in Africa have very limited electricity and the electricity bill can also be pricey. Inveneo provides solar panels that charge up a car battery which can then power up a computer for up to 48 hours. Using a low power computer and LCD monitor can save a lot more on energy use and can be a more efficient alternative than providing old donated PCs with CRT monitors. Older computers and CRT monitors use a lot more power and over time, you can make up the costs of purchasing the low power computers from the difference in electricity saved. Having solar panels can also be more cost efficient than paying for electricity as it can cost up to $20 a day in certain locations in Africa.
