The 2008 Green Apple Festival is looking for non-profit organizations and Green businesses to apply for a booth space for the free Earth Day concerts across America. The concert is free, the booth spaces are not. The Green Apple Festival presented by Chase and the Earth Day Network will be happening on April 18-20th, 2008 will be a weekend of music and environmental awareness that will take place at eight different cities including New York City, Washington D.C., Chicago, Miami, Denver, Dallas, San Francisco, and Los Angeles. More info about the festival can be found at http://www.greenapplefestival.com. It should be an interesting event.

The Green Festival 2007 is a joint project of Global Exchange and Co-op America and is an event for people, communities, and businesses to share all elements of being green. The event takes place at the San Francisco Concourse Exhibition Center and Giftcenter Pavillion Theater November 9th-11th. There will be speakers from the Green industry and exhibitors on display so that you can learn more about the different businesses and how their products/services help the environment.

Last week, EcoTuesday was held at the Green Building Exchange in Redwood City. It was a little different from the normal San Francisco scene and probably attracted interest from people in the peninsula. There were free Countrytyme cocktail drinks made from Square One Organic Vodka as well as free Mateveza beer, a Yerba Matte Ale. The speaker at this event was Bill Coleman, COO of Planktos, an ecosystem restoration company that I covered here. He spoke about what the company was doing to help fight global warming as well as answer any questions that the audience had for him and about Planktos.

I finally went through all of the 1300 photos that I took at Burning Man and here are some of the highlights. There are some very impressive displays of artwork that took months to build such as the BigRigJig, NeverwasHaul, and SteamTreeHouse, which are all pictured below. It wasn’t until I looked at the websites did I find out more about all the work and materials that went into building these things. I also discovered that a lot of environmental thought was put into making sure a lot of the materials were recycled, recyclable and reuseable.

I am finally back from Burning Man and I had a blast. It was an awesome experience with tons to see and was truly a photographer’s heaven. Many people who have never gone say that it is just a place for older people to go have sex, drugs, and alcohol and rave naked but it is totally not what Burning Man is all about. It is a great place to be free and escape reality and work for a week and just be equal individuals among good friendly people from all over the world. As far as the Green Theme at Burning Man, it was not emphasized as much as I would have hoped to see. At the dome underneath the Man, there were exhibits about saving the environment and being green. The people and campers at Burning Man also try to be green by having separate areas for compost, recycling, and garbage. There are also random exhibits that run on Biofuel and Tesla Motors brought out an exhibit of their car with information displayed for people to read about electric cars (The name Tesla obviously was not used in any of the displays because branding is not allowed at BM). It is pretty hard to be green when you hold an event in the middle of the desert and bring 47,000 people there for a week but they are trying and that is a good start. PreBM, the organization has done a lot to try to offset carbon emissions as I have blogged about here. The Burning Man website has a section on being Green here and Coolingman.org is another website specifically meant to reduce the carbon produced from Burning Man. Plenty of pictures are still to come.
