Garbage Island

Many people may not know about this but there is a growing ecological catastrophe called the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. It is a collection of unwanted plastics that have wandered into the middle of the Pacific Ocean northeast of Hawaii. The patch was discovered by Captain Charles Moore in 1997 and he has since formed a nonprofit organization called Algalita Marine Research Foundation to learn more about this phenomenon. Plastic is not biodegradable and it can often end up in the ocean. It is not surprising that it has all ended up in this remote part of the Ocean in the middle of nowhere which is twice the size of Texas. The video above is definitely worth your time to learn more about this interesting discovery.
