First OLED TV Display
October 1st, 2007 Alex
Sony is planning on releasing the first OLED (Organic Light-Emitting Diode) TV on December 1st in Japan. An 11 inch model with a 3-millimeter screen will cost about $1,700. OLED screens have brighter pictures, higher contract, and better color than current LCD and plasma screens. The technology in LOED displays uses an organic material that emits light which allows it be so thin unlike the backlight or projections on the other displays. The biggest benefit of OLED displays is that since they do not require a backlight, they use a lot less power and can operate longer when powered from a battery. They are also easier to produce and can be more flexible and made from plastic. The drawbacks right now for OLEDs is that they have a lifetime of around 5,000 hours as opposed to 60,000 hours or so for LCDs and Plasma screens. I am sure that with more R & D, this technology will be improved.
