Tidal Power at Golden Gate Bridge
June 20th, 2007 Alex

The Golden Gate Bridge may be the backdrop for future tidal power turbines as Newson just announced the third city-backed study in two years on how to use the tides in the bay to create power. The plan is to place turbines below the bridge to create tidal power for the city. PG&E has committed $1.5 million for research in existing and emerging technologies as well as environmental impacts and costs of having the underwater turbines. A release in May 2006 by the Electric Power Research Institute found that the tides beneath the Golden Gate Bridge are one of the best locations on the western coast of Northern America to generate tidal power. Tidal Power is a source of power that has not been fully taken advantage of yet but can definitely be something that we will see more of in the future. Since 71% of the Earth is covered by water, using the tidal power from the ocean would be a great source of energy.
